What is a contingency fee?
A contingency fee basically means that the firm does not get paid unless and until there is a settlement. It works like a commission. There is no up-front cost to hire the lawyer, and the lawyer is not paid by the hour. If the lawyer does not win your case and you do not receive compensation, you don’t have to pay any fees. For a typical injury case like a car accident, most lawyers charge one-third (33.33%) of the settlement.
This type of financial arrangement between client and attorney typically appeals to clients because the client can get the legal help that they need without having to worry about paying for a retainer, upfront fees, or hourly charges. With a contingency fee agreement, you can also take comfort knowing that your lawyer will work hard to get the best possible outcome in your case since any compensation your attorney receives for his or her time is based strictly on their ability to win your claim. Consequently, there’s very little risk involved and potentially much to gain when you agree to hire a lawyer on a contingency fee basis.
